The Battle of Bull Run
There are multiple important battles of the Civil War but the most famous was the Battle of Bull Run. Bull Run was actually 2 battles they were very large battles. The Confederates won the Battle of Bull Run. Bull Run was the first major battle for Virgina. The battles other name was Manasses. The Battle of Gettysburg:
Some of the other battles were the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was 3 battles over a span of 3 Days. There were some battles like the Seven Day Battle which was when the Confederacy made the Union retreat back to Richmond, Virginia by starting smaller battles and using brute force. On the first day Confederates drove the Union to Cemetary Hill. The battle was led by Gen. Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy and Union Gen. George G. Meade. On the second day, Lee struck the sides of the Union line. This resulted in terrible fighting at Devil's Den, Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, Peach Orchard, Culp’s Hill and East Cemetery Hill. The Confederates gained no ground on the second day of the battle. On the third day, at Culps Hill the Union regained lost ground. Lee attacked at Cemetary Ridge this battle is now known as Picketts Charge. Lee's second attempted battle of the North failed. Shermans March to the Sea:
Shermans March to the Sea was when he burned down half of Atlanta, Georgia and other southern cities and towns. Atlanta fell to Shermans troops on September 2nd, 1864. He destroyed everything in his path just to push the Confederacy back. The picture below is of William Tecumseh Sherman. He was sent by Grant to clear the southern railroads and industries. "War is war, and not popularity seeking"- William Tecumseh Sherman to his critics. In April in North Carolina he met up with Grant to close in on the last Confederate defenses where Lee had to retreat from Richmond. This made the south see that they would have to surrender. Lee said,"There is nothing left for me to do but go and see General Grant and I would rather die a thousand deaths".
